Makeup Look: Matte Grunge

Hello friends! Now that it’s August, I feel the autumn vibes starting to peep in, albeit a tiny bit early (I’m looking at you, crafts stores). I personally love spring and autumn (they’re what I call “transition seasons”), so to prepare for autumn after a nice and temperate summer at Guatemala, I have brought you guys a grunge-inspired matte brown makeup look.

Before I start with the actual makeup look, I’d like to ramble a little bit. Recently I have been having a bit of a “style rediscovery” kind of phase, and since I had more down time during this summer, I had plenty of time to try to define what my style was. Up until now, I didn’t have a cohesive theme to my fashion style, not even a loose one. And while it didn’t bother me so much because I didn’t want to limit my clothing choices to a particular theme/style, I thought it might be nice to have one particular style to have in mind when shopping so my wardrobe did not become a random mess of different styles of clothes that I had trouble making outfits with.

The conclusion came to me out of nowhere, but I decided that the style that I leaned most towards was grunge (style? movement? what should I call this?). Personality-wise, I think that I’m really bubbly and not the rebel that grunge is usually associated with, but style wise, I like grunge most. So I’ve been rebuilding my style getting inspiration from various grunge fashion styles and I thought, hey, why not also do a makeup look inspired on grunge too? And so, this was look was born. Now, once I return to the US, I can start posting more about fashion and I’m super excited to starting building grunge inspired outfits.

Well, now that I’m done with my ramble, we can get started with the makeup look.

First I started off by prepping my lips with Smith’s Minted Rose Lip Balm and priming my face with my Innisfree No Sebum Blur Primer on several parts of my face. Then I applied a generous amount of Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch Sunscreen SPF 30, let it absorb, and then applied a little bit of my L’Oreal Infallible Pro-Matte 24HR Foundation in 103 Natural Buff.

Today I used my Olive Young Makeup sponge without wetting it. Using the sponge like that improved the coverage a little bit, but it looked and felt heavier than usual and I could really feel the difference when washing my face off later on. I think I will stick with wetting the sponge because I’m personally not the biggest fan of heavy coverage products. I side with those that prefer using foundation/cc cream to even out the overall tone of the face and using concealer for coverage where it is needed.

Then I used my Revlon Photoready Concealer in 003 to cover up my dark circles and the red spots on my forehead, chin, cheeks, and on/around my nose. Then I blended that out with the pointier side of the same makeup sponge.

Then I used a powder brush and my Tony Moly Aqua Aura Moist Finish Pact in 02 Skin Beige to set my face. Then I used my NYX Soft Matte Bronzer in Light to define my cheeks and hairline, then I used a powder brush and my Jelly Pong Pong Cosmetics Bronzer Duo in Aruba, the orange blush shade to add a subtle pop of colour to my cheekbones.

I used my angled brush and brown Inglot shadows to define and fill in my brows.

 

Now for the eye makeup: first I used my It Cosmetics Airbrush Crease Blending Brush #105 to spread Nooner, a matte brown shade from my trusty old Naked 3 Palette all over my lid. Then used the shade Factory to line my eyes and to make a small parallelogram shape on the outer corner of the eyes.

This “parallelogram” trick is something I learned from the wonderful Dayeong, a Korean Beauty YouTuber that I had mentioned before (if you’d like to check her out, here’s the link to her channel). Then I used Liar to blend it out and used the shade Limit (another matte pink shade, but lighter) to accentuate the inner half of the lid. Then I used a smaller brush to put Liar on the outer third of the lower lash line.

To top it off, I used black liquid eyeliner to make a sharp and long wing. It’s also okay to go overboard and make a thicker wing, which I’ll definitely be trying out later.

For the lips, I used my Inglot Matte Lipstick in the shade 405 and then I sprayed my face with my Urban Decay All-Nighter makeup setting spray to finish off the look.
